GAME VIEWING, BIRDING South Luangwa National Park lies within the Luangwa Valley, whose floor, for the most part, is gently sloping and well wooded, with isolated, broken ridges and a flat alluvial plain. Two large grassland plains of some 400 km are located in the park, with smaller grassland areas to the north. The Luangwa River inundates its flood plain periodically, usually in February, and after a flood the river sometimes changes its course, leaving oxbow lakes along the old channel. This instability creates the richness of scenery and the highly productive ecosystem for which the Luangwa Valley is well known. In addition the open grassland, there are areas of miombo and mopane woodland. Covering 9 050 km, South Luangwa was proclaimed a national park in 1938. It has exceptionally rich and varied wildlife, but commercial poaching has brought the eco-widespread black rhinoceros population to the brink of extinction and elephant numbers have also declined. Hippopotamus, buffalo, warthog, the endemic Thornicrfot's giraffe, bushbuck, kudu, land, reedbuck, waterbuck, puku, roan and Lictenstein's hartebeest are just a few of the game species that may be seen. The are is also well known for its predators, which include lion, leopard and spotted hyena. This is an excellent birding area, and amongst others, many raptor and waterfowl species may be seen. Location: Eastern Zambia; north-east of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka take the main road eastwards to Chipata, then a secondary road north-westwards to the park's main entrance at Mfuwe. Access roads are suitable for all vehicles, although the road between Chipata and Mfuwe is often in poor condition. Within the park there is an all-weather game-viewing circuit in the Mfuwe area, but elsewhere 4x4 vehicles are recommended. Safari operators meet clients at Lusaka, and Zambian Airways run regular flights to Mfuwe Airport, 25 km from Mfuwe Lodge.
